    Description

Up for sale, a 1958 Fender Deluxe 8 console lap steel in excellent, 100% original condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original tweed hardshell case and chrome-plated legs. This clean Pre-CBS Fender console steel features an ash body, yielding a complex midrange character and plenty of sonic authority, qualities channeled faithfully through the pickup pair. The tone is quintessential Fender single coil richness and chime, and the black bobbin pickup pair is wound similar to a Stratocaster, with identical construction save for the 8 pole design. There's a bell-like sweetness to the sound that is equal parts twang and silk, and beneath the bridge cover, a Pickup Blend wheel adjusts the balance between the two coils.
The playing surface is clean, with immaculate block position markers, and the steel has a 22 1/2" scale length and 29 fret range. The Patent Pend. chrome-plated headstock overlay houses the original Kluson Deluxe single line tuning machines which function smoothly. The electronics are untouched, with original solder joints, cloth-covered leads, paper-in-oil tone cap, and Stackpole pots that date to the 15th week of 1956. In the control cavity, the factory masking tape is pencil dated February 29th, 1958. The pickup cavities have been painted with shielding paint, and there is additional aluminum shielding as well, doubling up the noise rejection and ensuring the best possible signal-to-noise ratio. The Pickup Blend wheel and serial number are present beneath the bridge cover, and the chrome plating on the hardware has ample shine including the control plate and pair of original flat-topped knurled knobs.
The nitro lacquer Blonde finish highlights the broad grain of the ash body, with extensive lacquer checking on all sides. Cosmetic wear is limited to a number of small chips along the edges of the instrument, and a small area of localized wear through the finish on the treble-side edge of the strum path.
The original lacquered tweed “knucklebuster” hardshell case with red poodle interior is included. The case is in great shape, with uniform ambering of the tweed, brown leather ends, functional latches, and the luggage style handle. The central latch is located beneath the handle, hence the “knucklebuster” nickname.
The original trio of chrome legs are included, although they function only at their lowest height. The "telescoping" nature of the legs isn't functional, however, these legs are identical to a Fender Rhodes Stage piano leg (same length and thread), and can be easily sourced through vendors including Vintage Vibe if desired.
